The storms that battered the East Coast of Australia this week caused havoc but the real kicker was the deadly combination of the storm system and high tides that had us suffering a “continuous bashing”.
The intense low pressure storm hit at the same time as a king tide – a colloquial term for any high tide that’s above average. These occur naturally and on a regular basis, can be predicted per the tide book and in normal conditions the height of king tides will be similar from year to year. Unfortunately, adding a severe storm or cyclone to the equation can push the sea level way above the average height due to the strong winds and low air pressure.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen damage like this: last year in April there was $800 million worth of damage compared to an estimated $38 million as of Monday afternoon this time around. However, the extent of the damage seen along the coast has really emphasised the issue.
Our thoughts are with all those affected and we would advise that if you have boat insurance with Topsail and have suffered loss or damage please contact us as soon as possible and we will take the necessary steps to assist.
