MISSING CANADIAN SAILOR

A Canadian, solo, around-the-world sailor is presumed missing at sea after his family alerted the authorities when he did not arrive early last month.

Paul Lim from Salt Spring Island was making his journey from Hilo, Hawaii to Victoria two months ago and was due to arrive at the beginning of September.

After family reported him as not arriving the U.S Coastguard has begun searching for the 68-year-old sailor and his 35’ yacht, Watercolour.

Known to be a challenging journey at this time of year, experienced sailor Mr. Lim took his white-hulled, Spencer sailing yacht via the Australia route because he was keen to return to Canada.

Coastguards have been sweeping the area in search of Watercolour and while there has of yet been no sign of the vessel a local fishing boat confirmed that they had made contact with Paul near the north coast of Hawaii in early August.

The retired UVic Professor is known to be a skilled open-water sailor having covered many hundreds of sea miles. In 2011 he was rescued from his abandoned ship on his way to Canada after engine issues off the coast of Australia.

We are hoping Mr Lim is well and taking shelter somewhere and hope to hear of his safe return soon. We urge anyone who has seen or heard about the whereabouts of Mr Lim or Watercolour to call the U.S. Coast Guard at 510-437-3701.
