Clipper Sailor Wins YJA Yachtsman of the Year 2016

The Yachting Journalist’ Association (YJA) has announced the winner of this year’s boats.com YJA Yachtsman of the Year and it has gone to a heroic mid-ocean rescuer.

Gavin Reid, 28 from Devon joined Mission Performance for the 2015 – 2016 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race as novice sailor. The yacht and crew were sailing up the west coast of Australia competing in the Henri-Lloyd Hobart to Whitsunday’s leg of the Clipper Race when they received a Mayday call.

Mission Performance responded to the stricken yacht that was returning from the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. Gavin heroically volunteered to swim between the two yachts where he discovered four injured crew onboard and a fifth at the top of the mast who had been tangled for several hours.

He was able to heroically scale the mast himself and help lower the crewman down and aid in their rescue. Gavin commented from Trinity House on being nominated the winner: “To be named 2016 boats.com YJA Yachtsman of The Year over some of my absolute heroes of the sport, feels like an incredible honour.”
